Biography

Stéphane Gantelet studied sculpture at Leicester Polytechnic, England. He worked at the Max Leverier studio in Paris before settling in south of France. In the early nineties the figure was dominant in his artwork. Gradually a tension developed between the figure and the forms of its surroundings, eventually both dissolve and resolve into work developed from a folded membrane, a piece of folded paper; structure and surface at the same time.
A sheet of paper is flat, inflexible and without volume. To give it form Stéphane folds the paper
according to precise drawings done by hand or through a 3D modelling computer programme.“I think of the surface of the sculpture like a skin. The play of light reveals all the small variations of the material giving the history of the sculptures making and reavealing its
character.”
His sculpture his present in numerous private collections in France, Germany, Belgium, Holand and United States.
