Biography
Noel Gazzano is an artist and cultural anthropologist specialized in gender issues. She received formal training in visual and performance arts and holds a PhD in cultural anthropology. Her artistic and academic research merge, focusing on the psychological, sociocultural and political underpinnings of women’s identity in Italy; embodied experience and power dynamics; the connection between culture, violence and mental illness. She employs a variety of media: performance, installation, painting, ink. Her art is routinely displayed and is present in private collections in Italy and the USA. Her research is featured in scholarly publications and inspires her art and public speeches; she is actively engaged in promoting women’s rights and believes that art is a powerful means for cultural transformation. In 2014 she received the Robert F. Kennedy Center Europe sponsorship for her itinerant exhibition “Un Anno da Sirene” (A Mermaid Year) dedicated to raising awareness on gender issues and violence in Italy.
