Biography

Through the use of spontaneous brush strokes, it comes to my attention that the eye itself cannot see. The eye is no more than a mechanical object that records attention in a linear direction. An observation of great interest to me is that the eye is unable to define a circle as a round movement, because it can only map a circle out in either ascending or descending linear movements. A circle is therefore not seen with the eye but recorded with the eye. The seeing itself, is awareness or that which is prior to psychological definition. An example of awareness is when you enter into a room and everything is seen at once prior to any psychological definition taking place.
This observation challenges conceptual definitions of how and what we think we see in comparison to what is actually seeing, a subtlety that is ever present and on which everything known appears and disappears. This is my point of departure. By not getting involved with the naming of objects, I use my hand to record the eyes movement from point to point . Like this I attempt to define the simplest route the eye takes to map out an object. Subtle interplays of emotion present themselves as colour and by combining this with the eye’s movement, I creatively construct a painting.
