Biography

Yiannis Koukourakis was born in Athens in 1967. He first studied at the Department of Photography of the Technological Institute of Athens with Costis Andoniadis as his major tutor. He continued his postgraduate studies at Kent Art Institute in UK, sponsored by the Hellenic Republic State Scholarships Foundation. Since the 80’s, he has participated in various exhibitions and art festivals in Greece and abroad. He has exhibited his art projects in 3 personal shows in Athens and has participated in 12 group shows in festivals like “The Kodak European Awards” in Arles, France in 1991, where he won the first prize, in the Biennale of Young Mediterranean Artists in Marseille and Cordoba, as well as in the Athens International Month of Photography. His photographs can be found in the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, in “Olivepress” Contemporary Art Museum in Chania and in private collections. He has taught photographic applications and history of photography, at the department of Photography of the Technological Institute of Athens, at the Centre of Adult Education of Rethymnon and at the “Photoskiasi” Photography Group of TUC. Since 2006 he lives and works in Chania, Crete.
