Biography
Alexandra Crouwers’s works often arise as clusters or series in a project-based environment, such as a solo-show, an artist-in-residency or a group-exhibition deadline. Schooled as a classical painter, she increasingly uses the computer as a virtual atelier, in which 3D-software is an important component. These virtual environments, or stages and sets, are used in both digital prints and videos.
Cinematic conventions from both science-fiction and suspense movies are used to achieve a rather supernatural sense to the images. The viewer is immersed in a parallel universe, which looks almost real, due to the level of quality in the 3D-visualisations. One must keep in mind none of the objects, spaces or situations in the works actually exists physically. This is a reference to dreams, or dreamlike states within the mind – or rather the way our minds work subconsciously, connecting input to random output. Different elements often return in another role in various works, suggesting symbols with an unknown meaning. These elements are stored in an ever increasing database of objects and virtual spaces.
Void, or a sense of emptyness is an ever-returning theme lingering in the background, as are an investigation of landscapes, narratives without plots, domestic and religious spaces and the nature of light and shadows. Soundtracks and music are in many cases used as a starting point or as an addition to works or exhibitions.
