Biography

By painting the famly unit, I explore the construction of identity and the performativity of its narrative and memory. The haunting array of nostalgic passings and scenes relay a tension between the memories and the actual experienced past. I initially began with the family to which I was born by documenting source imagery from memories, familial history and domestic tradition. The exact narrative may be forgotten, but the complex projection of an idealized history serves to reflect an identity. A viewer also has a narrative shrouded in the reverence of a subjective memory. One may see an idealized view of exuberance, another may see a tension filled moment. However the viewer may interpret the work as an individual, family and at the broader scale, as a society; my work does not offer definitions or reasons. The work is simply presented to form a dialogue related to memory and its role in the construction of one's identity.
