Biography
KAREN VERMEREN (Ghent, °1982) studied Fine Arts, Painting, at the St Lucas University College of Art & Design in Ghent and obtained a Master-after-Master of Research in Art & Design. Her work has been shown in Belgium and abroad. Since 2009 she is linked to the St Lucas University College of Art & Design in Antwerp as researcher and teacher in drawing.
Karen Vermeren challenges traditional notions of landscape painting. She connects processes that, deep inside the earth, form the landscape with processes in the construction of the society. She creates a paradox between the transparent representation of the landscape and the framework of the exhibition space of the audience. In particular she wants to explore this fault line between image and space, representation and environment.
