Biography

Siobhan Beaton works with video, photography, installation and performance. The project 'Ephemera' is concerned with the exploration of sugar as a sculptural material. Sugar is an everyday substance with many associations. It can be seen as a 'drug food' with psychological consoling effects, prompting comparisons with wider society in terms of cycles of desire and consumption. The processed sugar is transformed by heating and spinning, creating patterns as well as a sense of movement and mood using colour, space, gesture and in the case of live performance, smell. The forms created are transitory, they dissipate and fade away. The impossibility to instantly recognise the material compels the viewer to look again. At the core of this work is the desire to make people look again at things often overlooked.
