Biography
Originally from Mexico, Monica Alcazar-Duarte has lived in London since 2003. Monica graduated with an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from London College of Communication with Distinction in December 2013. She previously attended Central Saint Martins where she studied Performance Practice. She has been awarded the prestigious Mead Fellowship 2014 to produce her next photobook series "Forerunners."
Monica has exhibited her installation and photobook "Your Photographs Could Be Used By Drug Dealers" at various London venues. Her photobook has been placed in a number of private collections, the latest been an influential collector in New York. She was interviewed for her project in Mexico by Hotshoe Magazine International. A review of her work will appear in the Royal Photographic Society's Quarterly Journal for the Summer 2014 issue on Contemporary Photography.
She will be curating an exhibition this coming October 2014 on notions of memory, myth and the Vietnam war.
Her work is concerned with presenting images in a format where a fixed understanding is discouraged; asking viewers to take responsibility for their own conclusions and interpretations, to take ownership of their gaze.
