Matthew Humphreys explores the human condition, highlighting two key senses, sight and hearing, using these to present to the perceiver a discourse, which communicates and disseminates emotional states.
He is fascinated with technology and its intersection with experience. Forming relationships with cameras, following routines, he finds his inspiration and gathers source material; this is where translation and creation occurs, often expanding this material into installations.
His family, social relationships and the everyday are captured with his lens; this is coupled with research that delves into language, forms of communication, historicizing and the technical developments of mediums he employs.
Humphreys’ documentary video background informs his artistic practice, his attentive camera catches the most intimate moments and transforms them into universally engaging themes.
