Biography

Before dedicating myself to painting alone, I worked as a restorer for more than ten years, during which time I spent over 15,000 hours removing the layers with which time, dirt, smoke and circumstances had covered the work of many artists. So much time cleaning and restoring originals led to an obsessive search for the truth behind reality, authenticity concealed behind the layers of paint and varnish applied by others. In my own work, at first unintentionally and later deliberately, I take the opposite course. I accumulate layers, superimposing them to hide what is underneath. I enjoy exploring the relationship between the different strata of colours and textures created by the accumulation of material, seeking a harmonious whole, one which is difficult to explain clearly, as a result. I like to think of my work as being analogous to the reality in which we live: like history, made up of millions of factors and circumstances each on top of the other, relating to and influencing each other, and resulting in specific actions or periods. This also refers to what we are as individuals, palimpsests of layers of reality, visible or concealed, which confer us with our own identity.
