Biography

Pier Bonifacio was born in Genova. After finishing High School for Arts he then went on to graduate in painting from the city’s Language and Fine
Arts Academy. He has lived in London, Istanbul and Milan, first working in theatre as a set designer and subsequently writing and directing independent documentaries.
Drawing and painting are his main mode of artistic and creative expression.
In general, his paintings deal with the female nude, choosing an exaggerated perspective, anatomically correct but on occasions at the limits of recognition.
The monochromatic backgrounds are created through a layer of saturated acrylic and oli colours that tends to detach the subject from its surroundings, totally drawing attention to the body in its explicit nudity. Some are torsos, others seemingly float in timeless space, underlining the importance of a theoretical place, a context and a story the body in question can tell.
A number of these paintings are inspired by a series of insects, the nude subject suggesting the start of an imminent metaphysical transformation. Titles include: The Butterfly, The Grasshopper, The Bedbug, The Spider an d The Praying Mantis.
In the course of his work, form and anatomical detail, the figure rendered, have been progressively left free of constraints of style and continuity; the aspects and in some cases the existential torment they express have matured in a process of transfiguration of the image itself.
