Biography
Alfredo Maffei is a storyteller, his works seek to translate the experience lived with people he meets
on his travels, emphasizing their identities through paintings and interventions, Maffei wants to
highlight the personality and history of these individuals, who are integral and fundamental part of
the environment in which they live.
In his series "inconstancy the artist creates urban interventons on the walls of abandoned houses
portraying homeless individuals he meets. These large-format paintings, made with acrylic paint,
often covers the entire length of one wall – showing an expressive, although anonymous, face.
In this work you may notice a curious but sad contradiction: While there are people without homes,
there are also homes without peoples.
It is through his investigations, and based on personal experience, interviews, and real contact, that
the artist creates his work on walls filled with history. His paintings are done in precarious places,
explicitly illustrating their living conditions of homeless people. Exploring the conditions of neglect,
the wall becomes the witness of socio-cultural phenomenon. In large format, the irregularity and
roughness of the wall comes to be confused with the lines of those portrayed.
The inspiration comes from Maffei research through travel and human contact. These elements
provide a point of reflection on the relationship between the condition of between the condition of
their and others lives, emphasizing the universal human value. Each character embodies experience,
the technique embodies the relationship.
The work is based on many phases and procedures, and goes beyond the art object, where what
matters is the connection, integration and contact with the homeless, which are the living part of
the work.
