Brief biography:
Mario Azzena lives and works in Rome, where he was born.
The father Alberto (1925-2005) was a figurative painter from 60s to 90s, he worked in Rome and Sardinia . Mario grew up in this ambience, spending time at his father's studio (a big room in the house), surrounded by paintings, colors and art books, and following him in his solo exhibitions, conversing daily with him on art; engaging himself in the drawing since childhood, but especially in the use of color. After the Scientific Liceo final exam, began a degree course in psychology, interrupted after two years for serious health problems.
He was dedicated to other occupations for many years, while the creative aspect of his personality found in poetry an alternative form of expression, which allowed him to develop over the years, his poetics linked to existential themes, particularly with regard to the feeling of time passing, the emotional dynamics, the dream; these are flanked by social issues related to the reduction of freedom and real democracy, increasingly diminished in the current globalized society dominated by economic cynicism, as well as emigration tragedies that media report us daily.
It was very important for the artist, to study the thought of Achille Bonito Oliva, adopting those values that felt like his own: the quote strategy, the artist who returns to represent himself in the work, the color value, the interplay between figurative and abstract or the stylistic eclecticism, and finally the cultural openness.
Now his research, in contemporary art, lead him to produce paintings in which the expressionist and abstract approach, however allows a certain readability of the conceptual message; always so allusive, that evocate in the viewer emotions, moods and memories. Paintings so are bearers of meaning, with a strong symbolic value.
For now Azzena uses as a creative field only the canvas, but he thinks to explore other means of expression in the near future, like sculpture and installations.
In reference to private life, he is married to a Philippine woman and they have a son. He speaks English and Spanish.
