Biography
Abhijna Vemuru is an emerging artist born in Hyderabad, India. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in bachelor of fine arts from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her medium usually involves painting with oil, acrylic or watercolors and also fiber materials. However she always experiments with mixed media depending on the subject of her artwork. The subject of her interest is always related to women in the contemporary world. These women may be elderly ladies, mothers, young girls, or even goddesses or characters of mythology. Her main focus is to give importance to those women and those rituals in their daily life, which is neglected or unheard of. She also deals with subjects like culture, tradition and modernity and how it affects the feminine world. How does a woman become the main focus of culture? Why are goddesses so important in religion? How does the world of culture and tradition affect a female? These are the questions she tries to tackle. In addition to fine art, Abhijna also does textile design where in she tries to incorporate her art into the applied art industry.
