Biography
Francisca Prieto’s work seeks to uncover the intrinsic characteristics of an idea or object – its very essence – looking to recreate it through the appropriation of its fundamental nature. The conceptual analysis and structural principles that characterise her practice emerge primarily in spatial configurations. Stemming from an interest in typography, Francisca’s work has evolved from the deconstruction of symbols and letters to considered and mathematical constructions that convey original narratives.
Each artwork not only reads up close, drawing attention to unique and telling details, but from afar, with shadows of colour or pattern creating shapes or symbols. With every angle and fold mathematically and meaningfully considered, there is always a powerful discourse between the individuality of the parts and the whole. It is the search for realising and revealing meaning that pushes Francisca’s work to constantly evolve.
Francisca was born in Chile, where she trained and worked as a graphic designer. In 2001 she moved to London to study for an MA at Central Saint Martins, where she has continued to live and work, exhibiting frequently. Her work is collected internationally by private clients and features in public collections including the National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Gallery and the British Library.
