Fort Monostor, Komarom, Hungary
Przemysl is today, a quiet little town in Poland, a few kilometres from the Ukrainian border. It used to belong to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the largest system of fortresses was built up here before World War I. It consisted of 42 smaller or bigger fortresses defended by cca. 131,000 soldiers, 21,000 horses, 1,754 cannons and 73 machine-guns.
In September1914 the Russian troops attacked the fortresses, but they were not able to occupy them during a siege that took a month. In November 1914 the troops of the Tsar surrounded the fortress system, but they could force the defenders to surrender only after making them starve for 4 months.
My great-grandfather served in Przemysl as an artilleryman of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He was lucky because he got injured before the fortresses were surrounded, so he did not become a war prisoner in Russia and he survived the war. With this series of photos I would like to pay tribute to him and to the more than 100,000 people who died meaninglessly in Przemysl.
