“Some time In 2012, I used to have re-occurring lucid nightmares about the fall of the city I grew up in. Every time it took place, I was outside the city. I knew that this scenario would not happen, or rather wished it not to happen, but the nightmares persisted, annoying me. I started photographing the city, looking for tell-tale signs and confirmation that the city was still there.”

A City Reimagined explores the theme of memory as an attempt to restore, retain, and recall the dream space. Through an exhibition of photographs, videos and collaborative performative work, the project tackles nostalgia from an imaginative perspective. From the traces of objects and memories, Mdluli creates visual documents to a state of interiority.
This Wednesday, Mdluli will be presenting a collection of her recent photographic work. The opening will be accompanied by a presentation by the poet Thabo Lehlongwa aka Motho Fela, who will be responding to one of the artist’s video pieces.
Mbali Mdluli (b. 1977, SA) is a cross-disciplinary artist based in Johannesburg, who has been working as a professional DJ (under the name of Miz Buttons) for the last decade. She attended the Market Photo Workshop in 2010. A City Reimagined is her first solo exhibition.
