Memorabilia

Memorabilia

The Recoleta Cemetery is a historical cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1822, it was decreed the first public cemetery with artistic references from the Pierre Lachaise and Staglieno cemeteries. Running away from the yellow fever, wealthy families moved to the neighborhood and buried there distinguished figures of Argentina's history: politicians, national heroes, famous scientists, etcetera.

However, its monuments are not only icons of collective memory but triggers for those who contemplate them. In front of the sculptures, no visitor can resist to create and reconstruct their histories based on what they see.
They are the incarnation of life, death, rage, abandonment, desolation, tenderness, time and its secrets, love, hate and the need of the human spirit to perpetuate itself.
Who visits this necropolis finds itself face to face with disturbing questions of human history; in this disquiet dialogue appears the crossroads of the imaginary, the historical, the ethereal and the human.

“Memorabilia” is my personal journey through the corridors of this city of stone; it is a challenge to reconstruct the experience of the visitor and the unclear relationships between the sculptures
