Finding Serra

Finding Serra

My most recent piece of work is a series of images based on the Richard Serra sculpture in the Guggenheim, Bilbao.

I was fascinated both by the beauty and enormity of the magnificent steel structures but more than that the effect it had on the children and adults alike. It was like entering another world - the dark and convoluted interiors and the weathered steel gave one a sense of being somewhere out of time and space. People meandered in awe, seemingly lost, but pleasantly so.
The children ran about in ‘hide-and-seek-me’ excitement. I spent hours photographing my daughter and her friends dodging in and out of the
maze of steel sheets. The result is a series of composite images called finding serra, seeking serra and loving serra.

I saw some of these enormous and gorgeous pieces at Dia Beacon in New York. They seem to have become a whole something else in your photographs with your daughter and her friends. Some of the photographs even look like paintings. I love it.
