The memorial employee
"The memorial employee" is a new art project created by Shahar Marcus, the project was shot in various memorial sites around Kibbutz Yad Mordechai. In the scenes (5 still photographs and 2 videos) the artist is seen as a cardboard figure, dressed in a gray uniform, which looks like a uniform of World War II soldier or a pioneer’s uniform.
In this project Marcus deals with courage and humor with the meaning of a memorial project. The flat cardboard were shot in different positions, planted in different memorial sites in the Kibutz busy in their everyday chords. Cleaning the bunker where Mordechai Anilevich the leader of the Warsaw ghetto rebellion had hide. Washing and nourishing his Bronze monument statue, standing against an Egyptian tank that left in the battle field and confronting "Egyptians soldiers" made of iron at the memorial site of reconstruction the 1948 war. In one of the two videos the artist is climbing on Anilevich bronze statue, washing him with soap in slow movements like he is trying to clean the dirt from the heroism myth which the statue stands for.
In the other video "1,2,3,Herring" video work presents the artist playing in front of three cardboard figure, dressed in a gray uniform, which looks like a uniform of World War II soldier or a pioneer’s uniform. The scene takes place on a reconstruction war site in Israel, of the 1948 war between Egypt and Israel, where flat iron figures of Egyptian soldiers are planted in the battlefield.
In the video the artist is fighting against himself while playing popular children game 1,2,3 herring. In this game the participants run up whenever the seeker turns his back to them, while he is counting to three, the participants should look like frozen when the seeker finish counting and turn toward them. The game is known also as "green light, red light".
