No Country For Old Men

No Country For Old Men

In my current work I expand on the journalistic idiom that I have explored throughout my career. I have used black and white photography to expose political and cultural issues. Often tense and suggestive of violence and isolation, these photographs have been made in a spirit of hope and camaraderie.

Deepening my investigation of the human condition through aesthetic and technical experimentation, I bring together these images and elements of collage through the controlled application of a variety of photographic chemicals and light exposure to produce evocative, one-of-a kind works.

This work represents a hybrid of the aesthetics employed in classical painting and traditional photography. Juxtaposing my own photographs allows them to speak to each other, opening up the visual field in a way that creates dialogue and makes space for new meanings to emerge. Applying chemicals to the photographic paper while controlling their exposure to light gives texture and dimension to these images. I embrace the world of painting through alchemy in ways that echo the drips and brush strokes of abstract expressionism. Traditionally captured images of contemporary life are contextualized in an emotionally laden and aesthetically nuanced landscape. These risk taking techniques bring new energy to my photography.
