'The Swamp of Savannah '86'

Historically, landscapes have been documented as a means to visually describe places at various points in time. Therefore, the image of a landscape is used to create a setting, instead of existing as an independent entity, like the subject of a portrait. In this work, the inconsistency of the sparsely developed film hinders the viewer’s recognition of the subject matter. The attention brought to the material nature of the film permits the audience to initially view the work as an object, then as a landscape image. Overall, the combination of the film’s intimate scale and mixtures of development in the emulsion, serve as hints to the original experience the photographer had with the space.
