CUCKOO LAND

I got inspiration from a real occurrence in Shan Xi, China where one family’s graves have been forced to migrate. The residential buildings have already been built around the grave in order to push the family moving decedents out. The grave holder refused to move therefore the grave became a “Nail Grave”. Repressive power not only been executed on a physical level, but also occurs in the spiritual dimension of people in my country. Unequal power has been applied to individuals by government, which can be seen everywhere.

A virtual island locates in the concrete city. The island is full of vitality; soil is made up by human brain, varieties of plants are growing on it. The island is an allusion of creative thinking and individual wills. The video of carnival is representing on the gravestone, suggesting that people should follow their courage and uprightness. Bodies should mingle together without respect in order to resist the situation that is fragmented, distinguished and under controlled. The scene of cement ground and reinforced buildings alludes the strengthening of authority and the gridded power. Standardized producing is seriously obliterating the individual wills and encroaching the right for freedom.
