Jack

In his work, Maurice Meewisse portrays the hardworking manual labourer. He searches for a heroic portrayal of man willing to sacrifice himself out of a necessity or for a greater good and distills this image in his performances. In Jack, a one hour long performance, Meewisse chops through a large constructed log of wood by hand, the strokes establishing a steady tempo like a metronome. As the beat of a pulse, with an almost primitive force of vitality, the sound of the axe accompanies his work. Chopping wood for fire and shelter is an age-old necessity for survival and in this performance Meewisse represents a masculine archetype, an emblem of strength, endurance and resilience.
