IDENTITY
IDENTITY
Being an artist was never the easiest way to live, but being an artist is not a job, it's a vocation. Being an artist in Croatia was never easy as well but is especially hard today. And while Croatia is trying to find the way to present (and to keep) its identity to the union that she has entered, artists are reviewing theirs.
As a professional free-lance artist, I have been trying to find my own place in our society for years. In society which is in deep economic crises, society in which people lose their jobs on daily bases, in which people hardly find their way to make ends meet and can't afford even main necessities for their everyday life, society without art market, art is something unnecessary.
While even in the cave community every member had its purpose, I feel as a nonentity in mine. Artists, like viruses – can't be exterminated, they are here and they are redundant.
In the society of I3;“celebrities“,“ tycoons“, “entrepreneurs“, artists, like clowns, arouse smile on people's face. I am a doctor, I am a lawyer, I am an engineer, and you? AaaaaRTIST! How cute! Can you make living out of it? And what does your husband do?
This is something I always hear .Not admiration to someone's talent, not respect for being one of only 1200 free-lance artists of all professions in Croatia, one of those who promote our country in its best way, not by criminal or scandals.
That is why I feel as I don't exist.
The work I would like to present has been evolving for the past 9-10 month. It is consisted of more than 300 photographs, made one every day (and I am still making them, it's a work in progress). On each of them is just a part of my hair or shoulder and the street or other space behind me. Those photographs look as they were made by accident and they represent my feeling of non-existence and non-belonging. Among them there are only two on which my face can be seen, representing two days when I felt alive .First one is when I was awarded in Paris (in November 2012) for my photography and the second one is when I was awarded for design in Como, Italy (in April 2013.).Only two days when I felt appreciated and respected, being among my own kind, being in my own habitat, when I felt as a person with IDENTITY.
