Sadhu on the Banks of Bagmati - oil painting on linen

In Hinduism, wandering monks or holy men are called sadhus and have devoted their lives to seeking moksa (liberation). You can see them near temples all over India and Nepal, and they have given up there pocessions, family, and anything else that would bind them to society, so that they can focus on their spiritual goal. They are considered "the walking dead" because they are dead unto themselves and in India they are even considered legally dead. Unlike most outcasts in societies, sadhus are highly respected by Hindus. This is an oil painting of a sadhu I saw at Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, Nepal in the summer of 2012.
