On March 17, 2011 Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed into law House File #589.

Under HF589 a person who gains access, under false pretenses, to any (Iowa) agricultural production facility, or harbors or otherwise assists others in that action, to produce a record which reproduces an image or sound occurring at the animal facility, can be charged with a class D Felony.

This Ag-Gag bill - and others like it in Kansas, Montana, North Dakota and Utah - will prevent the making and publication of further photographic evidence of the unconscionable, even obscene and gratuitous, cruelty at Factory Farms. Such laws inadvertently make these States safe havens for the large scale abuse of animals.

A Mercy For Animals undercover investigation showed practices at one of the nation's largest pork producers, Iowa Select Farms in Kamrar, Iowa. There, sows and their piglets suffer unrelenting pain and misery. Pigs are highly social, affectionate and intelligent creatures. They suffer, both physically and emotionally, when they are confined in cages so narrow that they cannot even turn around.

"Filmed in Iowa" hopes to raise awareness of this unnecessary and often gratuitous abuse of sentient animals; and, the suppression - the censorship - of materials that would properly inform and educate people of conscience.
