Evidence 9965 is one in a series of photographs of simulated crime scenes produced during an artist residency in collaboration with a forensic anthropologist at Teesside University, UK. They were taken at the university’s Crime Scene House, where numerous rooms simulating different crime scenarios are used by students to practice forensic evidence collection and photo-documentation. The existing furniture, objects and luminescent chemicals (used for the forensic study of trace human substances) were restaged by the artist to create mise-en-scènes that suggest disquieting narratives laden with hidden fears and anxiety. They were photographed with compositions and perspectives inconsistent with strict forensic protocols, using long exposure in near darkness, with or without ultraviolet light.
