"What does thinking look like?"
In sociological terms we are capable of experiencing three types or ‘objects’ of thought; - the first is the real and tangible, the second is concerned with Platonic ideas and concepts and the third is less easy to define but seemingly allows for a separate imaginative, creative domain. The meaning and substance of the cognitive process in painting is the driving element in this work.
Interestingly, when a painting is both an object of thought and the means of communicating that thought, the liminal space between painting and viewer becomes intrinsic. The introduction of the armchair painting addresses this concern. By inviting the viewer to sit in the chair/painting, interesting questions are posed about the empirical value painting holds for the viewer and how that involvement and dialogue can be actively present in the work.
