Changing States of Play

Title of work: Changing states of play

Changing States of Play was a collaborative photographic project that documented my father Clive Penn spanning a 3-year period between 2009-2011.
The project was inspired by my love of photo narratives and tableau photography.
Drawing inspiration from artists, such as Colin Grey, Larry Sultan and Anna and Bernhard Blume we explored our own relationship through both composed and "off the cuff" shoots.

When we think of family photography we normally think of snaps of children, holidays and special occasions, taken predominantly by parents and or grandparents documenting the happier times in our lives.

Changing states of play breaks away from the preconceptions of photographic norms, and reverses the relationship between the subject and its captor.
Our collaboration amalgamates personal artifact and artistic objective.
The project embraced the politics of the personal and the public, documenting our time together in what can be seen as a ‘non traditional’ method. We explored family photography as art, opening up our lives to public critique and intrigue.

The majority of family photography is made for private consumption; we invest in our family albums the weight of our past and the emotions they evoke.
As 'outsiders' looking in we are only permitted to see what is shown within the frame. Our voyeuristic interest in 'the family' allows us to compare and contrast our own lives and experiences with that of others, often looking for affirmation of ideological normality’s.

The images I have selected form a much larger body of work. Collaborating on this project my father had creative input over how he wanted to be photographed, further allowing the work to elevate beyond the realms of conventional pictorial photography.
As well as composed images the work also features some more candid imagery, the project also later evolved to incorporate sequential narrative imagery.
The photographic collaboration ended in late 2011 due to my father’s sudden passing, although the imagery and its comical narrative themes are what inspired our collaboration, at the heart of the work still remains the singular relationship between a father and a daughter and these images although unconventional still grace the pages of our family album.
