The Human Spacesuit

The Human Spacesuit

One could say my work dwells on the cusp of the visible and the invisible, exploring the lacuna of social interaction and language. My interest in fluctuating relationships is further influenced by the advancement of, and our involvement with, technology and social networking. In a society where we are increasingly ‘tech savvy’, we are arguably becoming more isolated. Being part of what may be the last generation to experience the transition from a social media-less upbringing, moving into a life that is almost completely integrated with technology, both socially and professionally, one ponders if we are also the last generation to recognize the choice we have, in whether to actively participate or avert our attention from the social networking revolution in pursuit of ‘real’ connections. Further questions arise; are we already in the last era to understand the impact this distanced interaction has had on our social connections?
The Human Spacesuit describes this concept of the human/machine relationship in response to how it may be affecting our human interactions; symbolizing a ‘suit’ of futuristic armor that is carrying forward the figure from past, through our present and into a future that hasn’t yet been experienced. One ponders where technology will take our species, if not on a continued path into ‘further fragmented’ digital encounters, stepping further away from real connections.
