Basculement

Basculement

This series of drawing is a collection of personal and unique "architectural moments" from all over the world:
The process always starts with a trip, to find a modern or contemporary styled building to photograph as a reference. When I make my choice it is really important to physically interact with the architecture - go inside, touch its surfaces and see how the light reacts on the materials. Architecture is never static. It depends on its environement and the passing of the time. When these factors are integrated I take pictures using unexpected points of view such as a low angle shot. Before redrawing the selected picture I reframe, reverse or rotate it if needed in order to create an "abstract urban landscape". I want to give the feeling to the viewer that they can go inside the picture and walk on this landscape.
It's followed by the long drawing process. After spending hours doing similar movements in pursuit of ranging shades of gray, I finally fold the paper in a way to form a grid.

Through a method of tilting (french: basculement) of the point of view, the spectator loses his marks. A transformation takes place, creating a new space. The support (the size and the folded paper) uses old standard codes of technical architectural drawing. It's also a way for me to materialize the transition and immersion beetween the real world (the tridimensional folded paper) and the illusionist drawing.
The shadows of the drawing blend in with the shadows of the folded paper. This accentuates the feeling of loosing marks. As a result stands a purified architecture close to science-fiction.
