Appearances
I am currently working on a project called "Appearances" that explores the conflicting effects of digital media on social behaviour and how that in turn is altering our conception of identity.
The series is a combination of 35mm and digital prints, a format that in and of itself aims to express the interaction of traditional and modern processes in twenty-first century society.
The sequence of photographs illustrates how an individual's identity morphs with the use of social media, ultimately ending with the individual regaining her personal agency.
In addition, the interaction between the two characters in the photographs aims to articulate the complex nature of social media...as one becomes more social through said media, her physical engagement decreases and her world becomes more solitary.
As a user of social media myself, I feel personally moved to enlighten others of the effects of the digital world through the expression of my own experiences. I hope that my audience reflects on their engagements with the world around them and more importantly, the quality of those engagements.
I would also like for my audience to contemplate how we - community members and social media users - might be able to alter how digital media is used in an attempt to reduce its negative effects on society.
