This is from a series of oil paintings of opium poppy fields. The poppy pods in this painting have a three dimensional quality, as if they are full of the fluid from the pod. My method of painting involves pouring oil paint, which then forms a skin over top of a wet underlayer. In this painting, the horizon line is pushed to the top of the canvas, leaving most of the picture plane to be made up with the pods. The overall effect is semi-abstract and fluid. I am from Vancouver, where we have a serious opiod drug problem. However, I am also aware of the helpful properties of the drug - as well as the beauty of the poppy plant itself. The painting is meant to be beautiful but ambiguous.
