parts or objects associated with them and their, in actual lives and
practices, simultaneous dehumanization by, false or real, inflated
masculine power and strength. Put in another words my art practice is
engaged with, at one hand, historical storehouse of art production,
circulation and consumption and, on the other, commodification of
women and their images and violence perpetuated against them either by
controlling and circulating kind of images which fulfils otherwise
repressed desires and sexuality or construction of norms and discourse
which domesticates them.
Knowing the problematic of taking elements from African Art, my recent
artworks engage with that. I do not employ African motifs randomly; I
choose elements or objects related to females, are embroidered
drapery, or bases or represented female figurines or objects or images
associated with their works or themselves. They are for me archival
records of simultaneously valorized female bodies and works and their
subordinated, regulated and exploited status.
I amalgamate images taken from various sources in a form of montage,
created digitally. It is notion of montage technique and its
conceptual underpinnings which enables me to bring multiple time and
space/place in a single frame - in an artwork rendered digitally by me
- time of any historically represented African image of objects or
symbolized female bodies to experiences of my time and location into
it. Montage technique also enables me to articulate genealogy of
disabling burden of various forms of coercive traditions, of which
past has not acquired its pastness and thus it looms heavily on the
present.
My art practice is not restricted to any particular art form or
technique. It includes, according to the need and ‘nature’ of subject
undertaken, painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, sewing,
installation and digital collage.
Mobile as an instrument has simultaneously replaced many gadgets like
radio, tape-recorder, Walkman, vcr/vcp and brought them together in
one gadget that is in smartphones. I am using many of its applications
to produce my recent series of works.
