The Loss of Identity in a Synthetic Reality

In 1930, the population of the world was 1 billion people. Today the population has reached over 6.8 billion. There are four babies born every second. Each one will strive to be an individual.

This installation is designed to provoke discussion about the population explosion, mass marketing and the difficulty in finding one's individuality in the world today.

Projected on the walls around the installation are logos, text and imagery, in much the same way that brand names are constantly projected on the masses and individuality is reduced to must-have gadgets and brands.

The installation will have a longer projection of imagery and slogans showing the dehumanising effects of constant exposure to advertising. The focus is on the media as a source of persuasion distracting people from reality with ads and mindless offerings of celebrities' lives, their clothes, hairstyles and relationships. This constant indoctrination of a false belief system offers little to ordinary people and is designed to create a mindless slave-state where no one is worried about anything other than buying food, paying rent, watching reality TV and getting the newest must-have cellphone to distract themselves from the emptiness.
