The trigger for the 'parts' project was the often and in different contexts cited quote "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Intrigued by musings whether "greater" in this phrase shouldn't be replaced with “different” and in some cases even with “less”, I set out to investigate the relation between whole and parts in visual perception. What happens when I deconstruct an image and reconstruct it in a different way?
As a starting point I chose my unpublished photographic series of high summer - high noon deserted squares and streets in Italy. During the process I got carried away by the many de- and reconstruction possibilities that were unfolding. Like a child in front of a heap of building blocks I let my imagination take over. Until -finally, yet quite sudden- I reached the right balance between all elements important to me (building and surroundings, light and darkness, harmony and dissonance). The result is more and less than an answer to the question.
