This is a series of watercolours in medium and large formats. I created them after watching a number of medical procedures. The techniques of the doctors allowed me to see deep into the workings of the human body, and made me think both about how I was formed as a man and how, as an artist, I might employ parallel methods to convey my response. The techniques and materials used to produce these watercolours open up the possibility of playing on the various definitions of the word Speculate (Speculare in Italian): 1. A mirror that reflects an object symmetrically. 2. [philosophy] Investigate, search for the truth, a truth; thinking and meditating. 3. [economics and finance] To seek a profit by exploiting favourable situations or the weaknesses of others.
