The video is made up of a series of interviews carried out with a range of people who were all asked the same question: “What is Contemporary Art?” Through the editing process, an ironic and provocative game is thus set up: none of the interviewees is shown while stating his or her own opinion, but all that is seen in the video is the moment just before their answer. The key to the work does not lie in revealing what people really think of contemporary art, but rather in highlighting the absolute irrelevance of the question posed. In the video, the instant in which people reflect, experiencing a moment of introspection in search of a verbal response becomes absolutely decisive, without them realising that they have already answered the question in that very moment of indecision, which thus loses its temporal connotation and provokes a sensation of waiting and anticipation. The work is thus an ironic provocation of the contemporary arts sys- tem and of ourselves, a declaration of love and a threat of war. Just what is Contemporary Art?
