Biography
Ralph de Jongh’s (1978) work immediately touches the viewer’s senses. His objects possess both sculptural and pictorial characteristics and are not easy to categorise. They are very tactile and evoke associations with candy: the viewer can hardly contain himself from touching the work and some people even confess to wanting to lick it. These reflexes spring from Ralph de Jongh’s use of colour and materials. When making his plaster objects he applies relieved and tactile surfaces such as blister padding, corrugated cardboard, aluminium foil or terry cloth. His colour idiom mainly exists of pastel shades and reminds one of children’s’ rooms, candy or a carton of melting ice cream.
