Biography
“ The only work that is worth making, is art that is made with conviction, it is work that is focused on things one cares about. If one does not focus on that it is ignoring the constant in one’s life “(quote from the book Art & Fear, published by Image continuum Press 2001).”
I view myself as an experimental artist. I work through an open creative process. I begin without knowing where it will end, what I will create. I discover while I advance in completing the work. I develop slowly, step by step. I enjoy creating this way. Art is a coincidence to me and an interactive process which develops into it’s own statement.
In 2014 I started working with collages as they have always interested me. Especially collages using old newsprints. In the past, the walls in homes were first covered with newspapers to paint or decorate afterwards. Almost everyone finds it intriguing to read old newspapers under the wallpaper in old homes. What year are they from? What was at that time in the newspapers? Are there old pictures? Etc. The first works in this series are painted collages of old newspapers and magazines. My focus is actors and actresses from the early 1930s.
Now, in these current works I am experimenting with painting and collages combining silk and laces. My paintings can be characterized as a balance between drawing and painting. Some works tend to be more drawing than painting, others vice versa.
The major themes in my work are people. I love to draw and paint portraits of people, and “life drawings” have always been my preferred Medium. I am fascinated by the imperfection of people. The small differences that make them unique. At this moment I am working on a series of women’s portraits. Old women, girls, women in prostitution. We live near the red light district. Where we notice women (Any reason why that you want to give here ?)
What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
It is a paragraph in a book that talked about art, and it said something like, “ Do not think you can make a Mona Lisa everyday “. Realizing that takes the pressure away. And makes painting a more relaxing and enjoyable task.
Prefer to work with music or in silence?
I like to work with music, sometimes classic adagios, and other relaxing classical music. Old French music is also a an inspiration.
If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?
Something cheerfull, not too serious, a painting by Maria Lassnig ‘u oder ich’.
Who are your favorite writers?
I don’t like to read fiction, I prefer to read non-fiction. I like to read about art, science, health , and biographies or interviews of famous people.
